leaving for orientation sunday

I'm finally going to orientation sunday. I know people have posted suggested lists before but if anyone's still willing i'd like to hear from everyone their essential orientation list.

someone said to bring your laptop if you have it, if I do bring my laptop will I have internet access in my room? AND will we need anything special to get wireless when we get to campus?

hey, you have access in your room. you need an ethernet cable to get on though. you can get those anywhere. i would def. bring it. my laptop helped me so so much when i was scheduling my classes because i was able to get it figured out before i went to register and got all the classes i wanted.

alternate opinion...

I didn't bring a laptop, and I didn't even miss having one. They give you as much time as you need in the computer lab before you have to register and honestly, the first like hour of orientation/checking in/etc. is basically dragging all your crap around the east quad until you get to your room so...the less stuff you have the better. But that's just my opinion. You certainly won't need a laptop.

As for wireless...as far as I know, if you have a wireless card in your laptop, you should be able to get access. There isn't any wireless access in the residence halls, but practically everywhere else on campus there is (cafes, libraries, even the diag...).

Yeah and if you need a computer at night you can go to the Undergraduate Library (UGLi) which is near East Wuad and is open until like 4 am or some ungodly hour. There are computers there that my friend and I used last summer to try to swith our housing at like 1 am.

Definately bring the least amount possible, but bring a HUGE fan.

pack as lightly as possible. try to fit everything (including your fan) into one bag. it makes a HUGE difference. when you first get to east quad, they make you go to four or five different lines and having only one bag was very nice.

having a laptop is nice when it comes to scheduling your classes. also, during downtime, it's nice to get on the internet and keep up-to-date about news stories (there aren't tv's anywhere). you could also bring some DVD's to watch.

and somewhere in the range of july 10-12, i responded to a post with a list of things to bring (but i was signed in as ittybittyme).

I didn't bring a laptop, even though I'm a computeraholic, and I was fine for 3 days =).

i just got back from orientation and if you forget everything at home just remember to bring a fan and underwear, but mostly just the fan. it is sooooo uncomfortably hot in the dorms. also if u get stuck with the top bunk bed it might be nice if you had one that attached to the rail or a small one that runs on batteries that u can have up there with you. good luck getting classes that are still open!

This is kind of silly, but do you guys recommend a sleeping bag or blanket for bedding?

I'd bring sheet for the bottom and maybe a sheet to cover you up. It's gonna be HOT as hell in there.

During my orientation, I never even put the sheet I brought on my bed. I put the fitted sheet over the mattress and the pillowcase over the pillow, but that was it. I was never even cool in my room, let alone cold. Plus, they provide each bed with a wool blanket. Yeah, as soon as I got in my room it got thrown into the closet and was never taken out again. I slept without any kind of covers and even then I was extremely hot, to the point where it was hard to get to sleep. I'd say only bring a sleeping bag if you don't want to/don't have extra long sheets. I wouldn't recommend sleeping on the bare mattress (it's a kind of gross thought), and I'd say then just sleep ontop of your sleeping bag as it'd be way too hot to sleep inside of it.

As long as you're not planning on sleeping in the sleeping bag, go for it. I took a sleeping bag instead of sheets when I went at the end of June. I just unrolled it onto my bed and slept on top of it, and it worked very nicely.

Blankets were provided, though you're not going to want them.

If you intend to have sheets on your bed, don't forget to bring extra long ones. I overlooked that on the checklist they sent us until the night (more like a few hours) before I left. Yes, a big fan is great; don't count on your roommate to bring one. Mine didn't, but I had my huge fan and it made a big difference. Also, some rooms have the non-bunk bed up against the back wall right in front of the window. It wouldn't have mattered for me since I had the top bunk, but if you get the ground bed, a box-frame fan (I don't know the name for it; its a fan with a square frame thats tall and wide but not very deep) placed on the window sill would deliver cooler outside-air right on you. As for a laptop, I don't think it's all that necessary. We were pretty busy, and there were cool things to do during the downtime like parties and checking out AA. Plus there are plenty of computers for setting up a schedule, and they alot a large portion to doing just that before your registration appointment.
